Serene Mountain Roads and Contrasting Moments in Norway
A Day of Peaceful Riding, Unique Lunch Spots, and Norwegian Comfort
A Slow Start with a Big Breakfast
This morning, we took our time, savoring a hearty Norwegian breakfast. After fueling up in Dovre, we hit the road heading southeast toward Lillehammer. Our route avoided the main highways, favoring scenic backroads through Norway’s stunning mountainous terrain.
Twisting and turning through the hills, the ride was simply perfect—smooth roads, breathtaking views, and hardly any traffic. The kind of riding that makes you grateful for moments like these.
Lunch with a View—and Contrasting Sounds
Around noon, a supermarket appeared on the horizon in Forset, offering an ideal stop for a quick lunch. Behind the store, a narrow path led us to an unexpected gem—a small picnic area with tables and benches overlooking a lively village scene.
From our sunny spot, we witnessed two vastly different events unfolding: about 40 children were loudly competing in what appeared to be a summer camp tournament, cheering and shouting encouragement to their teams. Just steps away, a solemn funeral service was underway in the churchyard. The contrast was striking—life’s vibrancy against the backdrop of its inevitable end.
Finding Shelter at Sveastranda Camping
After another scenic afternoon ride, we arrived at a supermarket near Lillehammer to pick up ingredients for dinner. Camping options were sparse in the area, but we eventually found Sveastranda Camping in Redalen, about 30 minutes away.
Originally, we planned to pitch our tents, but the relentless wind persuaded us to opt for a cozy cabin instead. For just 8 euros more than the camping fee, it was a no-brainer.
Sveastranda Camping turned out to be a great choice—spacious, well-maintained, and equipped with an excellent shared kitchen. We whipped up lapskaus (a traditional Norwegian stew) paired with flatbrød (crispy flatbread). Comfort food at its best!
Evening Reflections by the Cabin
After dinner, we enjoyed a hot cup of coffee on the terrace of our cabin. Sheltered from the wind but bundled up in warm layers, we watched the sun dip below the horizon as the temperature dropped.
With over 6,500 km behind us in just under four weeks, it’s hard to believe we’re entering the final leg of this incredible journey. Tomorrow, we’ll likely cross into Sweden, heading toward Gothenburg.
There’s still one week left to soak up the open road before we point our bikes toward home.
Cultural Highlights:
- Lapskaus: A hearty Norwegian stew made with potatoes, vegetables, and meat. Flatbrød, a traditional Norwegian crispy bread, is often served alongside.
- Sveastranda Camping: Located on the banks of Lake Mjøsa, it offers excellent facilities, including cabins, a communal kitchen, and stunning views of the lake.
