Crossing Borders: From Denmark’s Flatlands to Germany’s Green Hills
A Day of Contrasts on B-Roads
Today’s journey took us along the scenic B-roads of Denmark, a country that, to be honest, pales in comparison to the breathtaking landscapes we’ve experienced in recent weeks. Denmark’s flat terrain, endless farmlands, and minimalist charm might appeal to some, but for us, it lacked the excitement and diversity we’ve grown used to.
Toll Troubles at the Great Belt Bridge
The highlight of the morning was crossing the Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen). Spanning 18 kilometers, this impressive suspension bridge connects the islands of Zealand and Funen. While Michel’s toll system flawlessly recognized his motorcycle, mine mistakenly categorized me as a car, charging me the higher rate—twice as much as the toll for a motorbike! No amount of arguing with the automated system could reverse it. It looks like I’ll be filing a claim when we get home.
Through Denmark and Beyond
With little to hold us back in Denmark, we made swift progress and reached the German border by mid-afternoon. The difference was immediate and striking:
- Denmark: Flat fields, calm villages, and an endless horizon.
- Germany: Lush greenery, well-maintained roads, and a more vibrant atmosphere.
The change in scenery alone made the ride more enjoyable as we ventured deeper into Schleswig-Holstein.
Nortorf: A Cozy Stop in Germany

Campingplatz Ritzebüttel

road sign
We arrived at Nortorf, a small town that bills itself as the “center of Schleswig-Holstein.” Our campsite is tucked behind a hotel. Signs around town politely remind drivers to slow down to 30 km/h, watch for crossing children, and remind us that it is has a “Seniorenheim”.
Despite its size, Nortorf is well-equipped:
- Supermarkets: Five of them, catering to every need.
- Restaurants: A surprising variety for a small town, with options ranging from traditional German fare to international cuisines.
Dinner at the Montenegrin Grill

Balkan restaurant Montenegro
For dinner, we opted for the Montenegrin restaurant in town. It was a feast of Balkan-style cuisine:
- Grilled meats, including perfectly seasoned sausages and kebabs.
- Roasted vegetables with just the right amount of char.
- Crispy fried potatoes that paired wonderfully with the savory mains.
All this, at classic German prices—a welcome change after the high costs of Scandinavia.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, we’ll continue south-west ward into Germany, taking in the sights along the way. With greener landscapes and winding roads ahead, it feels like the adventure is entering its end as our home land is coming closer.
Local Highlights:
- Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen): One of the longest suspension bridges in the world, a must-see for any road traveler.
- Schleswig-Holstein: Known for its rolling hills, quaint villages, and rich agricultural history.
- Nortorf: A charming little town with modern conveniences and a welcoming atmosphere.
