Motorcycle Journey to Bad Zwischenahn – Crossing the Weser by Ferry

Today brought a drastic change in weather: a sweltering 29°C in the afternoon. After weeks of cooler temperatures in northern Scandinavia, it felt almost unbearable to ride under such heat. Riding through this weather, especially with the additional stops at traffic lights in busier areas, made the journey less enjoyable than it could have been. The longer standstill times under the blazing sun had us longing for the cool breezes of the North.

We decided to call it a day earlier than usual, stopping at 4:00 PM to seek out some much-needed shade. Finding relief from the sun was a priority, as riding under these conditions had taken its toll.

Crossing the Weser by Ferry

A highlight of the day was taking the ferry across the Weser River. This iconic crossing connects the scenic routes of Lower Saxony and Bremen, offering a picturesque way to navigate the region. The ferry itself is a piece of local culture, with a long history of aiding travelers and locals alike. Watching the river currents as we floated across provided a moment of peace amidst the heat.

Evening at the Zwischenahn Lake

We ended our day in Bad Zwischenahn, a charming spa town known for its picturesque Zwischenahn Lake (“Zwischenahner Meer”). This lake is a hub of activity for sailing enthusiasts, and it’s surrounded by quaint restaurants and serene walking paths. Our dinner spot, simply called “Der Zwischenahner Segelklub”, turned out to be a pure sailing club. It was a perfect place to relax and take in the lake views.

The club’s harbor was bustling with sailboats, and the shimmering water reflected the golden hues of the setting sun. While we initially hoped to dine outside, the limited shaded seating forced us indoors. Still, the view from inside and the cool interior provided a comfortable compromise. The food was excellent, and the relaxed atmosphere of the sailing community added to the charm.

Camping Life and Evening Reflections

As the evening cooled, it became pleasant enough to sit outside. However, the mosquitoes seemed to have other plans. Armed with insect repellent, we enjoyed the quiet ambiance of the campground. One of the unique features of this campsite was the self-service beer fridge. Guests could simply grab a cold beer and leave their payment in a jar beside the fridge. It’s always heartwarming to encounter such trust and simplicity.

The campsite itself was well-maintained, offering a mix of shady spots and open areas. Many fellow travelers were unwinding after a day of exploring, sharing stories of their adventures under the evening sky.

Plans for Tomorrow

Tomorrow, we plan to take it easy again. We’ll leave later in the morning to avoid the worst of the heat and aim to stop earlier in the day, somewhere near the Dutch border. With another hot day in the forecast, pacing ourselves will be key to enjoying the journey. Bad Zwischenahn has been a pleasant stop, offering a mix of nature, culture, and a touch of local hospitality.

Stay tuned as we inch closer to home, with more stories to come from this incredible adventure!
